AMC Matador Coupe News

WHAT'S NEW?

A very interesting look at an Australian Matador X - photos of a right-hand drive Coupe.

If you missed it, you can read Kelly Schoof's new Project Valkyrie, posted in Fall 2002. You can also read Bill Dettman's Part 1 and Bill's Part 2 if you missed it, posted in Feb-May. He is restoring a Coupe similar to the one he had owned until 1989.

Earlier features include Kelly Schoof's Part 1, which I posted in November, and Kelly Schoof's Part 2, posted in December/January. He has some interesting stories to tell, and has made some interesting modifications to his Matador. You can view pictures of Kelly's beautiful blue custom Coupe HERE.

Jan. 24, 2006 - I finally merged the Matador Sedan site with this one. You can find the site HERE. While we have sold our Matador sedan, I have decided to keep up the site. If anyone wants to adopt it, I'll gladly send you the requisite html files so you can get up and running. Slow progress continues on my coupe.

Jan. 11, 2006 - Well, the good news is that I've finally gotten my garage organized and I plan to start working on my brown 76 Matador. I did get the broken lower front control arm replaced, and the new 401 shortblock is on the engine stand. If you have sent an email, I will be getting to it soon.

June 8, 2005 - I'm really behind on my correspondence, and I apologize to those of you who have written in. I'm trying to get to several each day, so I WILL get to them eventually. On the homefront, I've finally gotten around to working on my brown 76 Matador. I pulled the 360 and trans, and will be installing my newly built 401 and trans this summer. I'm hoping to get it on the road and enjoy it before winter strikes!

Sept. 24, 2004 - I raced at the AMC Nationals in Cordova, IL, so go check out the results! I also had some custom u-joint girdles made to replace the wimpy stock straps and bolts. These are available now, so if you want them for your AMC, let me know!

Sept. 15, 2004 - Well, I finally got Dolly on the track, and I'm heading for the AMC Nationals at Cordova, IL.

July 23, 2004 - Dolly is moving under her own power! See the update page for more details. I'm hoping to have her on the track in a couple of weeks.

July 14, 2004 - Added some new information to the Engine Specs page and the Tips page.

July 8, 2004 - The engine is started and broken in, just waiting to get some final pieces to get it on the road. I have caught up with SOME of my email, so check the Exchange page to see a bunch of new parts for sale, and want ads. If you have parts that can help someone out, contact them!

June, 2004 - Dolly's engine and trans is in, and I'm getting close to firing it up! I'll have some pictures soon.

May, 2004 - Well, I didn't get picked for the Real Ride Makeover, but at least it was a 69 Olds Cutlass that got chosen, not another Camaro or Firebird or Mustang. I have been working on my fleet. When you have 4 cars from the 70s, maintenance is inevitable.

Feb. 2, 2004 - Well, like all the other AMC fans in the universe, I was blown away by the AOL commercial during the Super Bowl that featured the Orange County Chopper crew and an AMC Matador Coupe!!! If you want some more information on this great ad, click HERE.

January 19, 2004 - Well, I did it. I registed my brown 76 Matador Coupe (James Brown) for the Horsepower TV "Real Ride Makeover". I don't know if I have a snowball's chance of making it, but what the heck! It would be cool, different, and exciting. Some modifications to more modern parts could include:

  • EFI using new systems from Indy or Edelbrock (one of the show's sponsors)
  • New aluminum heads from Indy or Edelbrock
  • All aluminum block, new from Indy
  • New ignition (DUI, Accel, MSD, etc.)
  • Supercharger or other power adder?
  • New tubular front subframe, rack & pinion, Air Ride or adjustable front suspension, or WSC's coil-over front suspension kit.
  • Upgraded brakes (WSC, Baer, or others?)
  • Upgraded rear, using GM 4-link parts (they fit the AMC Matador/Rebel rear end); OR coilover suspension
  • New Ford 9 inch or similar rear end
  • Slightly modified wheel openings to accomodate 16-17 inch wheels and rubber
  • Fiberglass hood and fenders
  • Modern high output headlights
  • Fully detailed interior - roll bar, new upholstery, 4 point harness for front seats, kicking audio, GPS, upgraded electronics, Vintage Air AC system (to replace all that bulky stuff under the hood!), new dash insert with AutoMeter gauges, sunroof(?), custom headliner and door panels (AMC or Matador theme), etc. Maybe turn it into a two seater to make room for audio equipment behind the seat?
  • Custom flush-mount rear taillights, possibly using inset round Corvette lenses
  • Custom front grille
  • Subtle hood scoop
  • Custom bumpers
  • Kickin' paint job - could be a NASCAR replica if it matched the theme of the car; otherwise the sky is the limit.
There is a build-up of the AMC 390 in the March Hot Rod issue that could just as easily apply to my 401. Some things I wouldn't want to change are the door handles, which are essential AMC style; windows, which really set the car apart; the round taillight idea; the round headlights and turn signals; and it must be AMC powered, of course. The selection is toward the end of February, so keep your fingers crossed!

January 2004 - I'm baaaaack! I know a lot of you were wondering whether the site was abandoned, etc. Well, sort of. I just simply haven't had time to work on the site (or my cars.....sigh) since I have been working two jobs and taking care of all the other little life issues that come up. I'll be trying to update the site in the next month, so if you have sent in a registry, be patient, and it will appear.

July 2, 2003 - More work on Dolly. I am really trying to get it done for the NAMDRA AMC Nationals in Cordova Aug. 1 & 2. Getting closer, but lots to do. I am selling off a bunch of my stashed Eagle parts, so if there is something you need, let me know. You can check out the AMC club site I am running at http://clubs.hemmings.com/dakotaamc if you like.

April 29, 2003 - Work on Dolly continues. All the part removal and demolition work is now done, so everything from this point on is constructive.

April 29, 2003 - I have been working on Dolly's engine. I have tracked down all the parts (thank God I bagged and tagged them!), have assembled the tranny and have the timing cover/water pump/oil pump all ready to install. I am waiting for my intake to get back from the shop with it's new ceramic coating, and I still need to double-check the engine timing and swap in the extended oil pickup for the deep oil pan. I'm hoping to get it running by the end of May. I also breathed life on my 1979 AMX which had been sidelined with a broken front coil spring. I installed a pair of new springs, new belts and hoses, new plugs and plug wires and some other general maintenance items, and it runs great.

March 6, 2003 - Well, I am finally all caught up with all the email I have received, both for this site and the Matador Sedan site. I am still on the lookout for concept and prototype drawings, pictures and information related to the Matador. Larry Daum kindly sent me pictures of early drawings of a 4 door sedan and a wagon based on the new Matador body style. You can see them on my History or Pictures pages. This is the first time I have seen these drawings, so I was pretty excited!

February 27, 2003 - I'm just about caught up with the influx of email! If you have sent me something recently, it is probably posted now. Do have patience, since I'm running the web duties for the Matador Sedan site also, plus all the stuff I have to do at work. Sometimes it's 2-3 weeks or more before I can get to everything.

I am on the hunt for concept and pre-production drawings and pictures of the Matador Coupe. If you have anything like this, please contact me. I have a few things I have gathered, but it's not much. I would love to see design concepts from the earliest phases through to production.

January 22, 2003 - I just got my issue of American Motoring, the official newsletter/magazine of the American Motors Owners Association. The Jan/Feb 2003 issue is the Matador feature, and there is a lot of great stuff in there. My website is mentioned, as are the stories of some who have registered on this site. If you want a copy of the magaine for yourself, go to the AMO website and click on AMO Treasure Sales to order the issue. If you aren't already a member, you should consider joining. You can also check out the other AMC organizations on my Links Page.

January 17, 2003 - Updates continue, including the new photo feature on Harry Freemantle's right hand drive Australian Matador X. Very interesting!

January 9, 2003 - Updates have been made to several of the Registry pages, as well as the Classifieds and Exchange pages. I have also added several new things to the Pictures page, including a very cool photo essay on the unique features of the Cassini Coupe. Thanks to Tom Benvie for sending me these pictures. It only took me 8 months to get them up on the site! Hope you like it.

January 6, 2003 - I had a good talk with Mike Spangler of AMO in November as he was preparing materials for the upcoming Matador issue of the AMO magazine. I hope some of you sent in your stories. My two Coupes are still out of commission for the time being, but I hope to have them up and running come late Spring. I've had lots of other time and money demands, so progress has been agonizingly slow. I have received several new registries and pictures, plus some other material I've acquired, so I'll be updating the site quite a bit over the next few weeks. Hope you enjoy it!

October 15, 2002 - For those of you that have a story to tell about your Matador, and there seem to be many, you need to get your story in print! Even if you have already sent it to me, be sure and send it to AMO, since they are going to feature the Matador in an upcoming issue of their newsletter. Here is the information from the AMO website: "Please send your Matador stories to AMERICAN MOTORING for our Matador issue. Please send them to: AMERICAN MOTORING, 892 N. Jackson Ave. Jefferson, WI 53549. Please submit them by November 20, 2002 for the Matador Issue. You can also submit them e-mail to: mspangler@jefnet.com."

October 1, 2002 - I have had a lot of people email with problems stemming from old listings on my Classifieds page. Part of the problem is that I only hear if a car is sold if the seller or a potential buyer tell me, and I just don't have time to track down every listing on a regular basis. I have revamped the page so that the newest listings appear at the top, rather than listing them by model year. If you find a listing that is no longer active, let me know and I will update the listing. Thanks! And remember, this is a free site........

September 19, 2002 - Well, I haven't been able to do much with my Coupes, but I put new front brakes and ball joints on my 79 AMX and drove it to Cordova IL for the 2002 AMC Midwest Nationals. Even though it has it's issues, the AMX cleaned up pretty nice, and ended up winning 1st place in it's class in the car show. No, I didn't race it, but it ran pretty good. I'm still working little by little on the Coupes.

August 7, 2002 - Yes, this site is still alive! Apologies to those who have sent in registrations and haven't seen them on the site yet. I will get to it, I promise. The car still sits without an engine, and time slips by. I did order a new batch of parts that should allow me to get the engine and tranny in the car, so that would be progress! I am selling my two Yamaha QT50 scooters, so if someone out there is interested, just email me. You can see them in my mess of a garage HERE. I'll have some better pictures soon.

May 21, 2002 - Still working on Dolly, so if you have sent in a registry or an ad, I have been a bit slow to get them posted. If you have an idea for a feature article on the site, or a story about your Matador project, send it in to me! It doesn't matter if you have it edited perfectly, since I'll be happy to do that for you. Just send me the pertinent information, with as many details as possible, along with some pictures - the more the better!

May 8, 2002 - I've been working every spare moment I can on Dolly, and progress is being made. I found out some more information on the custom Coupe on my Pictures page. You can see Ted Marshall's cool creation HERE.

May 2, 2002 - Progress continues on Dolly, but I'm afraid that James Brown is parked for a while. I'm going to be replacing the 360 with a 401 that is sitting in my garage awating a rebuild, and I still need to replace the control arm bushings and left lower control arm. Since I need to get Dolly running, it will need to just sit until I can do it all.

DON'T FORGET - if you are interested in fiberglass replacement fenders or hood for your Matador Coupe, CLICK HERE for details. So far I have four people who have expressed an interest. I would like to have a few more before I commit to the actual production.

April 28, 2002 - Finally got to pick up the new engine for Dolly. It's sitting in my garage, complete except for valve covers, oil pan and front timing cover. There are some new pictures on my Project Dolly page.

April 26, 2002 - For those of you that have written, no I am not getting rid of Dolly after all. I had just reached a level of frustration at not being able to complete any of my projects. My brown Matador with the broken control arm - James Brown - will just have to stay parked in the garage for a while, since I am focusing my energies on Dolly to get her ready to race. I will be picking up the engine this weekend, so hopefully I can get her on the road in a few weeks.

April 16, 2002 - I am considering getting rid of my current 76 Coupe drag racer and concentrating my efforts on my other 76 Coupe. You can see "Dolly" at dolly.htm if you like.

The car is currently stripped down to pretty much bare bones for drag racing, but has the full interior, minus the carpet/pad, AC stuff and console (I still have the console if interested). The engine bay and wiring has been simplified to reflect the lack of AC, PS and stock ignition. I ran the MSD unit with it. Battery relocated to trunk. Driveshaft loop installed. All AC/heater/blower parts removed and firewall holes blocked off cleanly.

The car currently sits without engine or transmission, but could be made available with a running 360 and 727 and driveshaft (in need of U-joints). It could also be made available with the B&M Pro Stick shifter and AutoGage tach/shift lite combo.

The car needs the driver's side floorpan repaired. Front fenders have rust behind the front wheels - currently "repaired" with aluminum tape. The rear quarters are rusty behind the rear wheels - currently also "repaired" with aluminum tape. It ran two years in this configuration with no problems from track tech guys.

Car can also be made available with current 3.73 posi rear, or with stock 3.15 non-posi rear. Best quarter-mile time with a pretty stock 401 and very stock 727 was 13.56 on 26" slicks.

If you are interested, email me and I'll give you more details. I really want the car gone ASAP, or I'll just strip her down and haul off the carcass. I'd like to see someone else enjoy the car, though.

April 9, 2002 - Well, it seems bad news comes in bunches. My wife's red Matador sedan is overheating for some unknown reason. It has new belts, new thermostat, cleaned radiator, new coolant. My 81 Eagle developed a serious oil leak when the valve cover gasket failed, so I have to replace that. And most recently, yesterday the driver's side lower control arm on my 76 Coupe broke. You can go HERE to see the problem. I guess I can't complain too much. It has driven very well for over two years with nothing other than normal maintenance.

March 20, 2002 - Finally got my spare 401 torn down, and found a bit of a surprise inside. Go HERE to see. I am still looking for feedback on a possible Matador Coupe meet sometime in 2003. I am planning on hosting it in the Omaha area, since I live here, and there is a nice road track facility nearby that would be fun to try in our Matadors. The track is geared for the amateur enthusiast, and would be fun to try. The Omaha area also has a lot of hotel accomodations and attractions. If you might be interested in making the trek with your Coupe, drop me an email - matadorcoupe@gmail.com.

March 18, 2002 - NEWS FLASH! I am working with Franks' Custom Fiberglass to get fiberglass fenders and hood produced for the Coupe. If you think you might be interested, go HERE.

Although Dolly is far from being race-ready, I posted some information at Project Dolly regarding the engine part list and the flow numbers for the modified stock heads. I also have my spare 401 torn down, and it will be going to the shop soon in preparation for installation into my other Matador Coupe, James Brown.

March 2, 2002 - I'm caught up with registries and want ads again, so now I'm asking you, the visitor, a question: What do you want on this site? If you could pick any AMC or Matador related content to add, what would it be? I've tried to add a good variety of pictures, tech info and AMC literature, along with the registries and classifieds, but I want to know if there is something I don't currently have on the site that you want to see. Please EMAIL ME suggestions!

March 2, 2002 - I've been adding new registry and classified submissions, and making minor mods in several pages. The biggest change is the new feature article for March, sent in by Bill Dettman. He has some more pictures to send me, and I'll add them when I get them. Thanks Bill! If you have a story about your Matador - past or present - I will be more than happy to edit it into an article for you. If you don't think people would be interested, I can assure you that you're wrong! Long or short stories are fine, and the more pictures, the better!

February 14, 2002 - Happy Valentine's Day! I think I now have all the picture from the car shows I attended in 2001 on the Show Pictures page. More stuff to come as I continue to wade through my bookshelves.

February 13, 2002 - Added a lot of new pictures to my Car Show Pictures page, so check them out!

February 11, 2002 - Started work on my Car Show Pictures Page by putting in some of the pictures I took at the NAMDRA AMC Nationals 2001. There is much more to follow from the car shows I have been to. Be sure to check all my pictures pages regularly, since I will be adding quite a bit this week.

February 6, 2002 - Scanned and posted pages from the 1977 PIB to the Literature page; added the 1977 Trim Chart; added some pictures and cleaned up the pictures page.

February 5, 2002 - I added a BUNCH of pictures to my previously non-functioning AMC Pictures page. I'm sure I have a bunch more, too, so I'll add them as I find them. If you have pictures you want to share, send them, and if I need to credit a picture on the page to you or your site, email me.

February 3, 2002 - I guess I was motivated this weekend. I scanned a bunch of stuff I had sitting on the shelf (there's still a bunch more) and put it on the site. You will notice that the Paint Codes page is now functional, with paint chip and code charts for every year from 1974-1978. I also scanned some pictures of John Beddow's Matador Coupe project. He plans to take this car on Power Tour this summer. I also scanned pictures of a Matador Coupe crash test session that I think you will find interesting.

February 1, 2002 - Well, it's been a busy time around here. It has been unseasonably warm around here until the last couple of days (we got 9-10" of snow yesterday), so I replaced the driver's side halfshaft, ball joints and axle hub bearings on my Eagle wagon just in time for the snow to start. I also pulled down the driveshaft on my brown Matador to find the source of the vibration it had. If you want to see what I found, go HERE. The engine for Dolly is done, and the tranny for my brown Matador is done, so now I need to finish off the spare 401 I have in the garage to get ready to put in my brown Matador. I'll be putting the engine and tranny in Dolly as soon as I go get it.

I have a new page that I am working on, listing nothing but AMC vendors. The AMC Vendor Page is currently in beta, but will be online soon for all to see. If you are a vendor, or know one, the page has an easy to fill out form to make it convenient. The listing is 100% free as a service to AMC enthusiasts.

I am also on the hunt for a 1975 AMC Product Information Book. If you have one that you would be willing to loan, that will complete my online resource from 1974-78 for the Matador Coupe. I have a 1977 PIB that will be scanned soon. If you have one for sale, let me know that, too.

January 2, 2002 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!! It's hard to believe another year has gone by. I'm looking for feature article material for the site, so if you have a Coupe project, a story, or any Coupe-related material that would make a good feature, send it in, even if you're not sure. I'll do any editing that is needed. Pictures are great, too. I added several new entries to the classifieds and some other pages, including a posting on the Parts Exchange page that lists a new repro item - the glovebox liner! Special thanks to Keleigh Hardie for getting this part reproduced. If you have ever attempted to remove the glovebox liner to replace your heater core or fix your AC system, you know that the cardboard liner essentially just disintegrates in your hand. Both of mine were patched with quite a bit of duct tape, so I know I'll be ordering at least a couple of them.

December 19, 2001 - Caught up with a new batch of registrations and ad material that folks have sent in, so there are some new things to look at there. I also fixed several broken links that had cropped up. If anyone has pictures of their car they would like to share, do send them in. If you have a whole bunch of pictures, or some big picture files, send me an email first. That way I can be prepared. My mail account can bounce large messages back sometimes, and they will fill up my inbox in a hurry unless I download them and clear it out. I hope that peace and happiness finds you in this holiday season, and in the year to come.

December 5, 2001 - No big news on the Matador front for me. I've spent the last couple of days putting in a new timing chain, refurbished radiator and belts on my 1981 Eagle wagon. It still had the original plastic gear cam sprocket with 105K miles, so I figured it was time for a change. I did visit John Garland over Thanksgiving weekend and took a look at my 401 heads he is working on, and the 401 short block assembly. I will have the flow numbers from the heads posted soon, as well as details on the parts in it and work done to it.

November 29, 2001 - Well, happy birthday to me! The cold weather is here, and there is so much more I need to do to my vehicles. I am still looking for a January FEATURE ARTICLE, so if you have a Matador Coupe, or had a Matador Coupe, or have some great information or stories regarding the Matador Coupe, whether it is racing, restoration, touring, a current or past project, or whatever, please send your stuff to me! I especially like pictures. There have been several folks I have contacted regarding feature article information already, so if you're one of them, just send in the information, okay? I'd like to have two or three ready to go at any time, if possible. I'm not looking for perfect journalism - I much prefer seeing what real people have to say about their real cars. Length of the article isn't an issue, and if you prefer, you can just send me the raw data and I will whip it into shape for you.

November 20, 2001 - Wow! I think I am finally caught up with all the Registry Forms, Want Ads and Classifieds that have been filling my Inbox for the last couple of months. I thank everyone for their patience, and promise that I will keep on top of my email correspondence from now on. Well, at least I'll try. I added a new page just for fun today. Go to my AMC Humor Page to see what I have. I welcome submissions, too.

November 19, 2001 - Updated the Parts Exchange and Classifieds pages, and added several new entries to the Registry List as well.

November 14-15, 2001 - Well, if you are a regular visitor to this site, you know what's new! I have totally revamped the layout of this site, and added several more pages and features. Of course, not all of them are completed yet, but they will be soon. I have had so many requests for wiring diagrams, trim codes, VIN decoding, etc. that I decided to just set up pages for them so folks could have the pleasure of working this stuff out for themselves. I hope you like the new look. If you have other suggestions for features I could add to this site to be more useful, just email me!

November 1, 2001 - November already! I added a couple of registries and classifieds today, as well as some new pictures to the Pictures page. I have a bunch of stuff backlogged, so if you sent something in recently, just be patient. I WILL get to it, I promise. I hope you like my new "Feature Article" addition. If you have a story to tell, whether it is about a restoration, performance upgrade or a historical issue regarding the Matador Coupe - send it to me and I'll consider it for a feature spot.

October 30, 2001 - Well, it's been a while since I've had time to get to this page. Those who have sent in registry forms recently, they will get posted ASAP. This past week, I couldn't resist temptation, and bought a new toy. Go to AMX.htm to see the 1979 AMX we bought. 304, 4 speed, PS, no PB or AC, factory moonroof, 56K miles, almost totally original and unmolested. The seller was the third owner, and had the original window sticker, invoice, and owners envelope and literature, plus all the original parts.

September 19, 2001 - I added a large collection of Matador racing pictures to my pictures page. You can view it there, or jump right to it HERE. Hope you like it! If you have other racing pictures, or any corrections to my listing, let me know.

September 11, 2001 - In memory of the victims who died in today's tragic and brutal terrorist attack, and their family and friends. No words can adequately express the shock, horror, sadness, frustration and anger of the people of this nation, and their untold sympathy for those who suffered and are suffering. God Bless.

September 6, 2001 - I have been busy putting new literature, pictures and registries on the site. If you haven't been to the site in a while, odds are good you'll find a lot of new stuff.

August 28, 2001 - Check out the Literature Page and the Pictures Page for some recent updates.

August 22, 2001 - I put some new pics and news on my most recent update page and have been planning for more modifications to my brown 76 Matador. At this point it has all new MSD ignition (6AL box, coil, distributor, wires) and I'm working on the intake and carb, and a fuel pump. I'm also planning on some body work and new wheels. Unfortunately the car didn't want to behave, so it didn't make it to Cordova, but my wife's 78 Matador ran great.

August 2, 2001 - Well, a week from today we will be heading to Cordova, IL for the AMC Nationals! Looks like I'll have the cars ready. I put in my sway bar last night, and the detailing under the car looks nice - fresh paint, brand new bolts. I also did a visual inspection to check everything out. My wife's car now has all the hoses replaced, including the long heater hose that runs to the water pump. It is a pain to replace, since you have to remove the starter and the starter mount bracket to get to it. Tonight I'll be replacing the radiator, fan shroud, fan, upper and lower radiator hoses and thermostat housing and it will be ready to go.

July 30, 2001 - The prep work continues. I have my wife's Matador radiator out, along with the thermostat housing and radiator hoses. It ran a bit hot when we took it for a short road trip a week ago, so I decided to do something about it. It had a 195 degree thermostat in it, which will be replaced with a 180 degree unit, and the radiator is getting completely cleaned out. I will also check the timing and see if it needs adjusting. I'm getting it ready for the 5+ hour trek across Iowa to Cordova, IL for the AMC Nationals. By the way, you can check out my wife's new website devoted to the Matador sedan at http://www.geocities.com/bondamc2.

I am also continuing to prep my brown Matador Coupe for the trip, since I won't be racing this year. Not a whole lot to do, but it takes time. If I ever get caught up, I have a ton of stuff to post to the site, including pictures, manuals, literature, and promo items.

July 18, 2001 - Added some really great in-progress pictures to the Project Dolly page. Work continues, and the deadline of Aug. 8 looms large. My wife's new Matador now sports new BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires and a newly charged AC system. Hoses, belts, brakes, and other basic maintenance items are next. A trip to the body shop to touch up some spots isn't far off, either.

July 17, 2001 - Well, even more work done to Dolly, but the big news is that my wife bought a 1978 Matador sedan. It's not a Coupe, but it's Matador #3, and AMC #4 for us. The neighbors are starting to talk. You can see pictures of the new Matador here. Now I have two vehicles to get ready for the AMC Nationals in Cordova.

July 12, 2001 - Added several new listings to the Want Ads page; updated the Dolly page and put some more letters on the Scoop and Name The Coupe pages.

On a more ambitious note, I am thinking seriously of starting a custom design contest featuring the Matador Coupe. This will be a real contest, with some real money. The object is to come up with a do-able customization of the Matador Coupe, similar to what Troy at Rad Rides, and some of the other custom shops have come up with for 70s cars. Check out the Hot Rod issue a few months back where they showed custom concept cars based on 70s models, but no AMC products. If you are an artist or designer and this appeals to you, let me know.

Also, I would be interested in a design contest for a sticker I can use to send to those who register their car on the Coupe Coop. Probably not much money involved here, since I am a one man show, but I would certainly give credit to the designer on the sticker. Probably a round, 3-4" diameter sticker would be about right. Let your creativity go wild! I won't post any submissions without the consent of the person sending it.

July 5, 2001 - Added several new classified and registry list entries; updated the Project Dolly page. Things are moving kind of slowly on my car projects, but I should be picking up the pace soon as I prepare for the AMC Nationals in Cordova, IL. I'm shooting for a high 12 second time with my drag racing coupe this year! If you are interested in racing or showing your car in Cordova (I highly recommend it), visit the NAMDRA website at www.namdra.org. Where else can you see AMC cars on the show field and on the dragstrip?

June 6, 2001 - I added a couple of new things to the Pictures Page, including a photo essay on the unique Barcelona trim features.

May 30, 2001 - Well, progress on Dolly continues. I successfully removed the engine and transmission on Memorial Day in preparation for engine modifications and transmission replacement. If you want some tips on how to safely remove the hood from your Matador coupe, go to my Tips Page.

May 14, 2001 - Life here in my hometown has been interesting lately. We have had two very bad hailstorms, the most recent of which hit us at 6 a.m. on the 13th, Mother's Day. Well, nature proved she is really a mother. We had near-baseball sized hail that really mangled many cars and homes in the area. My Eagle wagon was hammered, and the repair estimate was so high the insurance company totaled it. Dolly, being made of stouter sheet metal, fared better, but still bears the scars of the huge hail stones. Our 2000 Dodge Ram pickup really took a beating, and our Starcraft camping trailer had over 30 holes in the thick fiberglass roof. The roof on our house, which had already been damaged to the point of needing replacement by the last storm, was further brutalized. Fortunately we didn't lose any windows in our cars or home, as many others did. It will be a while before repairs are made. My in-laws lost both of their skylights, and in their neighborhood, not one single skylight survived - over 60 houses! The hail was so big that there were still hailstones in the yard at 4 p.m. in 85 degree heat. I hope your Mother's Day was better!

May 11, 2001 - Well, the new domain is up and running smoothly, and I am gradually adding some of the extra information and format that I just couldn't do at my Geocities site. I have the old site set up to automatically forward people to the new domain, so if you ended up here and wondered why, now you know. It looks like the hope I had for the roof rail seals being reproduced isn't happening any time soon. Go HERE to read the transcripts of our correspondence. I will be organizing a grass-roots effort, contacting everyone on the Coupe Registry List, and making a serious appeal to several manufacturers this summer, so be prepared.

April 19, 2001 - I have been cleaning out my garage and came across some Matador parts I'm selling. Check them out HERE. Parts include wheel covers, wheels and a steering wheel. I got my brown 76 Coupe out of hibernation today. Drove it to work and got it washed. Felt good to drive it again. I am in the process of making some modifications to my racing Coupe, which I will put on the Project Dolly page. I hope your Spring is going well. If you have pictures, classifieds or just a story related to the Matador Coupe, send it in!

April 1, 2001 - Well, I finally got caught up on all the Registry forms that have been sent in. Some had been waiting since November. I also posted almost all of the classifieds listings I have received. There are a few left waiting on more information, but I think I have the rest done. If you have a car for sale, or if you have sent a Registry form or classifieds listing and haven't seen it on the site yet, let me know.

April 5, 2001 - Wow! It feels like Spring! There are still piles of snow in some of the parking lots and under some bushes, but there is green grass showing and crocus blooming. Yippee! The best news is that all of my AMCs are running fine (knock on wood). I have driven Dolly around a bit just for fun, and I fired up my brown 76 Matador, too. The Eagle continues to be my daily driver. I've been spending a large amount of time in the garage cleaning and organizing, and found a bunch of parts I had forgotten about. Some may be for sale, so I'll keep everyone posted.

I have added a bunch of registries today. My sincerest apologies to everyone who sent them in and waited, and waited and waited! My life has been a bit hectic since November, but it is better now. Watch the Registry and Classifieds pages, as new stuff will be showing up all week.

March 7, 2001 - First of all, let me say that I am VERY SORRY that I have been away from this site for so long. I have had a very busy winter. I changed jobs, have been in two drama productions, and have been dealing with more than my share of mechanical repairs on my cars. I will be catching up with all of the email and Registry Forms that have come in, so don't despair. I posted several new For Sale and Wanted ads on my Classifieds page today, added several letters to the Scoop page, and hope to enter some Registry Forms later this week. Thanks for all of your patience, and keep checking the site!

Nov. 7, 2000 - Well, we had a couple of inches of snow on the ground this morning, so I guess I'm done driving my Matadors until Spring. If you haven't been checking, I have been scouring the Web and publications for Matador coupes for sale and placing them on my Classifieds page, so there are lots of new listings.

A multi-part series on the transformation of my Matador into a drag racing machine is now in print in two different AMC publications. I even ran into a guy who had read it when I was racing in Topeka last week. Cool!

Oct. 31, 2000 - Put in several new registry entries, and a couple of new cars for sale on the classifieds page.

Oct. 30, 2000 - I don't know what Geocities is doing, but some of my file extensions got changed, so I apologize for any difficulties reaching various pages on my site. I think I have all the glitches fixed. if you find any more, email me!

I have added some more new classifieds, and keep updating my Project Dolly page. The most exciting news there is that I placed 2nd in Trophy class this past weekend! I will be spending this week catching up on registries that have been sent in, and will hopefully get a mass mailing out to everyone who has registered, now that drag racing season is essentially over.

Oct. 3, 2000 - Put up some new information on the classifieds page, and updated the progress on Dolly.

Sept. 21, 2000 - You might say it's about time, but I have been going through my email box and making sure that I have caught up with all the correspondence, registry forms (those that have registered, be patient, I will get your car put on the site), and cars wanted/cars for sale ads. I just put several new interesting letters on my Coupe Scoop page if you want something fun to read.

Sept. 15, 2000 - I've been organizing my MANY pictures and trying to archive the ones I'm not currently using on my site, as well as backing up the ones I am using in case they were lost. You can see my Matador Coupe and AMC photo albums at Zing.com (this site is now shut down), which is a great site for free picture hosting. Some of these pictures aren't on the Coupe Coop site due to limited space, although a few will show up soon. If you have cool AMC pictures you want to share, email them to me. If you have a huge quantity, or several large files, send them one at a time, and not all in the same day, or Yahoo! will kick them back to you.

Sept. 14, 2000 - Updated the classifieds, and put in a page stating my opionins on the valuation of Matador Coupes, buying or selling. You can check it out HERE.

Sept. 8, 2000 - I've been busy, so I haven't been able to keep up with new registries and classifieds like I want, but I got some new ones posted, and added more info to my Project Dolly page.

July 27, 2000 - Added some new production information to the Coupe History page, and updated my progress on Project Dolly.

July 19, 2000 - I added a page to document the progress on my Matador Coupe drag racer. Check out Project Dolly!

Jeff Kennedy of Kennedy American called to let me know that he has 10-12 pair of the very rare, very cool heavy duty fully boxed rear lower control arms for the Matador. I bought two pair, and others have bought them and have been very pleased. Make your Matador ride a lot better by investing in a pair. Once they're gone, they're gone! Jeff's contact information is under the Coupe Parts Sources section on the Classifieds page.

I have also scanned the Matador Coupe pages from my 1976 Salesman Price Guide. This cool little book includes the MSRP for the entire AMC line, and itemizes options individually and by order group. Very neat. Check it out on the Coupe Literature page.

May 25, 2000 - I've been fiddling with the site, trying to make it a bit easier to navigate. I was never really pleased with the original index page, so I totally revamped it. I also added a couple of other pages, including this one. I have added a couple of links, and some new vendors on the Classifieds page.

NEW PRODUCT? American Performance Products in Florida has announced that they are reproducing the roof rail weatherstripping. They will let me know when the finished product is available. I haven't heard anything from them yet, but I will let everyone know as soon as I receive a set. APP, are you watching this site?
